We are seeking a VP of Engineering who will be responsible for the strategic direction and the management of software development professionals.  The ideal candidate will be committed to building and nurturing  high-performing teams across Engineering, SRE/DevOps, IT, Product, Security, and Cloud Operations. The focus will be on consistent engineering practices to ensure stable product delivery that aligns with PayJunction's core values and contribute to long-term, sustainable success.

Stack

We operate in a Linux and Mac environment, and use Java and Javascript for our development. Puppet is our infrastructure automation tool and we rely on Selenium, Karma and JUnit for testing. Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning and Execution
    • Develop and execute a clear, strategic vision for the engineering operations that aligns with the company’s long-term business goals. This includes roadmap development, resource allocation, and performance metrics that support sustainable growth.
  • Leadership and Talent Development
    • Build a diverse, highly skilled engineering team capable of meeting current and future technology challenges. Enhances team capabilities through continuous training, career development opportunities, and performance management systems.
  • Leadership in Software Development
    • Lead the engineering team in the development of software solutions that are scalable, reliable, and secure. Must effectively use leadership skills to manage, inspire, and direct the software development team towards achieving technical excellence.
  • Quality Assurance and Compliance
    • Implement stringent quality assurance protocols and lead compliance with relevant legal and industry standards (PCI DSS, GDPR, etc.). Maintain a defect rate of less than 1% in all product releases and ensure 100% compliance with all audit requirements.
  • Product Development and Delivery
    • Ensure that the products developed by the team are of high quality, reliable and meet the customer expectations.
    • Develop the medium and long term roadmap for all systems based on strategic goals.
    • Translate medium-term and long-term vision into actionable goals for the team.
    • Ensure that the company's products are developed and delivered on time and on budget.
  • Infrastructure Oversight 
    • Manage and optimize the physical and cloud-based infrastructure, as well as the company IT infrastructure,  to ensure high availability, disaster recovery, and responsive load handling. Success includes proactive management that supports seamless scalability and robust security measures.
  • Resource Allocation and Budgeting
    • Resource Distribution
    • Vendor and Contract Management
    • Investment Prioritization
    • Expense Tracking and Reporting
    • Staffing Levels
    • Financial Reporting and Communication

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15 years in the software engineering development department with 7 of those years in a management leadership role, managing large-scale software projects.
  • At least 3 years in a VP, Sr. VP, CTO, or other comparable high level position.
  • Bachelors in CS is required. Masters in CS, Engineering , or related fields are a plus. Ongoing certifications that show continued learning around technology and best practices is preferred.
  • Experience in the payments industry or experience implementing SaaS payment systems.
  • Deep understanding of the payments ecosystem including areas such as
    • PCI DSS (required)
    • ISO 8583 (a plus)
    • EMV standard (a plus)
    • Technical/regulatory requirements specific to payment processing (a plus)
  • Expert in
    • Software development practices including:
      • High-availability systems
      • Micro-services
      • Front-end and back-end technologies
  • Proficient in Java, AWS and API driven products (JSON/REST)
  • Leadership experience with direct reports from leaders in Engineering, SRE/DevOps, Product, Security, IT and Cloud Operations.
  • Proficient in Agile/Scrum methodologies and experience with tools like Jira.
  • Experience working in at least two company sizes as a W2 employee
    • Companies with over 200 employees
    • Companies with under 200 employees
  • A ‘Builder Mentality’
    • Able to execute and build new teams/products and features, as opposed to just “maintaining” a large legacy product
    • Experience building a minimum of 2 teams with multiple functions reporting, including/not limited to:
      • Scrum Team (Software Development)
      • Scrum Team (SRE / DevOps)
